Well, we went off to Cyprus to the Isis Clinic, for IVF with ED, following a cycle of IVF in the UK that was unsuccessful, probably due
to low ovarian reserve.
There was very little information we could find online about ISIS clinic as the clinic is very new, but we felt
as a new clinic, with UK trained staff they would be keen. Some of the clinics we found online were old, and comments were mixed, but
this one seemed good. We chose Cyprus as ED was available, and flights from our local airports were good.
Dr Mavrides is a UK trained
and registered doctor, who has gone back to Cyprus to redevelop his father s clinic. He has built what seems to be a state-of the-art
clinic, which is well designed and easy to get to. You park outside, and everything is very modern inside we could even see the
embryos being loaded by the embryologist on TV before implantation. A number of the staff are UK trained, and speak good English not
all of the team speak English but this was never an issue.
We had our scans done at Care Manchester. Tests cost about
£110 each and we needed two scans before and one after. I would think any of the Care clinics would do this they
just need an email from Dr Mavrides. We had blood tests done by our GP. They were funny about this, but in the end they did them under
the NHS. Care would also have done them I think the cost is about £60 a test.
Dr Mavrides can issue you with a UK
private prescription. Our GP was funny about writing IVF related prescriptions, so you might ask him to send you a prescription by post,
otherwise he lets you know what you need to have prescribed by email. For ED the drugs before hand were about £40 and
about £90 afterwards. One of the drugs was injections, and I understand it can be given as a nasal spray I would
ask if this is satisfactory instead to reduce the number of injections. We did have an issue with getting syringes and needles we got
them through a family friend, you might want to clarify how you ll get them.
We stayed in Larnaca and drove to the clinic. This is
about a 40min trip and the clinic is off the road leading in to central Nicosia. Nicosia is an interesting town, and worth staying
here a few days, but if you are looking for a beach resort, the resorts around Larnaca are easy to access.
The clinic is in South-East
Nicosia. Maps of the area are hard to find online, and the street names are variable depending on the age of the map (the Cypriots have
changed lots of names recently). If you are going, we can give you directions and/or a scan of a map.
The paperwork in Cyprus is
very informal there seem to be no regulations (I m sure there are, but it s a lot softer than the UK).
Dr Mavrides
communication was OK he let us know all we needed to know and answered any questions we had by phone or email. Some clinics gave more
initial information, and we might have liked a flashy brochure first, but if you feel you need to know more, he was always quick to
respond. Unlike our UK consultant, we always spoke directly to Dr Mavrides and he was easy to get hold of.
ED was EUR 4350, including
everything but the scans and drugs in the UK. Repeat implantations are EUR 500 (plus UK scans and drugs). IXCIS was included (but not
needed).
We sent a bank transfer in advance, but the clinic does take credit cards, so no need for this, unlike some of the clinics. An
advance deposit was mentioned, but was never actually asked for.
We have 8 fertilised eggs. One was not great quality, but we have had 3
pairs frozen. 2 were implanted, and we re now 7 weeks pregnant! First scan next week and very excited.
I would suggest that if you are
having standard IVF, then do this in a local clinic in your country. We chased results , but really the results depend on you,
and reducing the travel time makes for a more stress-free experience. I would suggest going overseas wouldn t be cost effective
(obviously depends on your circumstances) or more effective, however if you need ED or SD, then you will have to go outside the UK, and
we are very happy to recommend ISIS Clinic in Nicosia, Cyprus and Dr Mavrides.
